At Metropolitan High School, we welcome students who have fallen behind in their credits but are still committed to earning a high school diploma.  We have a highly academic program and we believe in helping our students realize their potential. Our program is designed to help them change habits that result in failure into habits that lead to success. All of our students come to us at risk of being a dropout, and most leave as a graduate to pursue a college degree or further job training.

Many ask, “What makes our school a place where students change and grow into strong young adults?”  Visitors to our campus often remark that our school has a special environment that feels warm, nurturing, and professional. Our dedicated staff works hard to create a school climate that emphasizes personalization and is, simultaneously, highly structured.  We believe that our students need a safe place with clear, consistently enforced rules at which to attend school.  We teach our students how to be professional by using our school as a job model with all rules and procedures designed to reflect real world employment.

Our academic success is based on students being tested and placed in the appropriate skill level classes and not being promoted to the next class until they prove mastery of the subject. Our teachers have high expectations and the students rise to accomplish what is required.  Unlike some options schools, we have a full-day program, and our classes are teacher directed and taught, rather than being composed of a series of instructional packets.   

Students who are interested in attending our school can begin the process by coming to the attendance office and asking to take the reading test. We do not take new students without a call from the home school, during which we decide together whether the placement is appropriate for the student.  We are pleased to be the educational answer for many students and look forward to helping young adults achieve their goals.

Our mission is to establish a challenging and nurturing environment in which students grow academically, by mastering state and district standards, as well as socially, and personally in order to make positive, rational life choices. We will work as a team: staff, students, parents, and community, to prepare each child for the 21^st Century, believing our students will become successful through the collaborative efforts of all. We believe that all students are capable of learning and can be motivated to learn. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to learn to be responsible, make good decisions, and take control of their lives. We believe that our expectations of our students will assist them in setting higher educational and career goals, while our academic program, which is based on current research and practice, should prepare them to succeed in attaining these skills by mastering the state and district standards. We believe that students need to learn good communication, cooperation, collaboration, and problem solving skills in all classes.  We believe that we can provide a safe and nurturing environment and can assist students in changing attitudes, values, ideas, habits, behavior, and level of thinking to better ensure their success in the work world and the larger society in general.  We believe that each teacher should have definite goals that are aligned with the state and district standards for what they want students to learn and should design rewarding, relevant, and enjoyable lessons to assist students in achieving these academic goals within district policies.  We believe that all of the above will result in improved student academic performance as evidenced by local school, district, and state assessment instruments.  We believe in the importance of addressing the cultural and linguistic needs of our school population because our strength is in our unity as well as in our diversity.
